On Saturday, the EAB alternative committee met in Stevens Point to generate season structure packages to formulate incentives for increased antlerless harvest in herd control units. Several packages are now nearing the point where the public will be able to provide input. One of the ideas on the table is called a "bonus buck" option.
Hunters in areas of high deer populations who harvest and register 3 antlerless deer would have the option to receive a buck sticker that authorizes the harvest of an additional buck (limit one) to be used in that year or carried over to the next year. The infrastructure is already in place to issue hunters a sticker that authorizes the harvest of a buck.
If your a hunter that registers 3 antlerless deer in a herd control unit, you could receive a sticker that could be used in the archery season or the gun season or the ML season. This sticker would be good for the following year in all seasons as well. The buck also be harvested in a herd control unit.
Unlike EAB which was a 1:1 harvest regulation that mandated that a doe be harvested first, the "Bonus Buck" sticker is a voluntary incentive that allows the hunter to take deer in whatever order the hunter chooses and encourages harvesting antlerless deer at a rate of 3:1 with the benefit of receiving an additional buck tag.
What are your opinions of such a program?
