Based on messages Im getting here and on other forums where I have shown the leather chopper mitts I have been making there appears to be interest by folks wanting to purchase them. For as long as I have been making things (like knives) I have shied away from selling stuff for a variety of reasons but in the case of these leather mitts, I am considering selling them. The problem is what to charge. We are a like minded bunch so help me out here. My material costs per pair is $25. (leather, fur trim, Fleece material for liners, thread) Leather is the most expensive item (leather prices are crazy high in the volume I would buy). I didnt factor in the overhead like the electricity to sew them and print patterns and art work. It takes me 5 hours to make a pair of mitts (a right and left mitt and a right and left liner). If I work for $15 an hours x 5 hours that’s $75 + $25 in materials and Im at $100 per pair and frankly I don’t see people paying $100 for a pair of leather mittens no matter how cool they look. You can go to Fleet Farm and buy a pair of leather mitts for $20. At the same time there is a company out west selling this same sort of product for $200 a pair. ($225 for finger gloves) I know the obvious, streamline and modernize the process to make them faster. Find lower cost sources for materials. I am doing those things. Im looking for input from outdoors folks like you. If you don’t know what the heck Im talking about, go to the chopper mitt link below. wibowhunters.proboards.com/board/27/handymanWhat would you charge? What would you pay for them?
