For those of you who've bear hunted quite a bit - what % is the gut pile of the whole weight? Heart, lungs, all entrails, and liver sized blood clots. Field dressed weight was 467# - what would the live weight possibly have been? After drying skull was 21" B&C,SCI,and P&Y. It was a big bear and I was wondering what the live weight might have been.
590 -600 lbs. would be my guess. But no less than 550. Sounds like a real pig of a bear - nice going. The % as I understand is just under 1/3 but I have nothing to back that up, just something I heard years back. "My guess is just that, a guess."
Just got an email from a friend in area d - he's a bear guide and he, as far as I am concerned, knows as much about bear as anyone. He said 525 - 530, you got a number of answers maybe you could average them out and come up with a decent weight from that. It's a great bear by the way.
Guessing 530-550. If he was a well fed fat fall bear the percentage of field dressing waste would go down since the weight of blood, guts, and vitals wouldn't change much between spring and fall weight. I am assumeing that was a fall bear, if it was spring, wow, what a monster.
Z - That is one nice bear ! Nice mellon and I'm talking about the bear. haha We've weighed bears live and then weighed them after gutting and it averaged around 17 % some were as low as 13 % and some higher. Looks like his front legs are as big as stove pipes at the base always a good indicator of a big bear.
